The next generation of storage, backup, and media is here with Blu-ray drives. The Blu-ray disc format offers 5 to 10 times more storage than DVD, meaning 25 to 50 GB of data can be stored on a single Blu-ray disc. Blu-ray drives will lead the way for next generation data and high definition movie storage. In a side by side comparison 58% of the 1200 consumers surveyed preferred Blu-ray Disc, 26% were undecided and only 16% peferred HD-DVD While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM use a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead. Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup and allow playback of CDs and DVDs. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB. |
*Drives are made by many manufacturers and not all make use of all the features above In addition to Blu-ray we offer the older trusted methods of data storage, including UDO, MO, and Tape. Micro Technologies is proud to announce the arrival of this new technology to our website. Please contact our friendly Sales Team for more information on this cutting-edge new product!
