What does BeyondRAID™ mean? How is it better than traditional RAID systems?

It's called BeyondRAID for a reason.

BeyondRAID was developed by Data Robotics based on an advanced virtualization platform, with the intention to address some of the issues existing with traditional RAID. The result was something much more powerful and versatile than any RAID solution on the market. BeyondRAID chooses a protection algorithm based on data needs from moment to moment. The technology works at the data block level, allowing it to alternate blocks of data based on the system's status and needs.

What if a drive fails? What if I need more storage later?

Not a problem. If it's more capacity you want you can simply add a newer drive or rplace a smaller drive with a larger one. You don't need to change RAID levels, purchase a new array, or pool any RAID groups. The Drobo reconfigures itself automatically, and gives you the additional storage in minutes, not hours. If your IT department decides they would like to go from single to dual disk redundancy you don't need to start over with a new RAID level; You simply click a checkbox and BeyondRAID does the work for you. Now your system is protected even if two drives fail. If a drive happens to fail Drobo will re-layout the data to return to a protected state without requiring even a click from the user. When the drive is replaced Drobo will rebuild it without any prompting or problems.

Typical problems with traditional RAID systems

  • Complexity – To set up and maintain a RAID system you need to be an IT professional, or at the very least have an intimate understanding of RAID systems. That means understanding the differences between mirroring, striping, and parity and be able to choose the RAID level that your system needs.
  • Inability to change RAID levels – If you would like to make a change from RAID 5 to RAID 6 to now protect your system against two drive failures it isn't an easy task. Most storage arrays require to move the data off the array, reconfigure it, then move it back on. A RAID level change usually means reinitialize and start over.
  • Lack of expandability – Are you running out of space and need larger drives? RAID doesn't have an easily implementable solution for you. The easiest way to expand capacity is to start a new RAID pool, which means more drives to buy and more storage to manage. Alternatively you can always reinitialize your existing system and start over.
  • Debilitated state after a drive failure – When a drive fails most RAID systems remain in a vulnerable state until the drive is replaced. Performance is often hampered, and data loss could occur if another drive falters.
